이번 개인전은 최근작에서 초기작으로 거슬러 올라가는 기획 흐름을 반영하여 70여 점의 작업들로 설치 구성되었습니다. <감춰진 것을 드러내는, 2014> <거리를 두고 있는 접촉, 2018> <녹색광선, 2021> <앞뒷면, 2021> <피부의 눈 그리고 다른 침전물들, 2023> <섬 성, 2022> 을 경유하며 미공개 작업들과 함께 2024-25년 신작을 함께 만날 수 있습니다.

이영호는 현대 사회에서 이분법적으로 구분될 수 없는 다양한 영역과 다름을 끌어안으며 유연한 경계에 관심을 가져왔다. 작업 초기에 작가는 대상의 드러나지 않는 내부를 응시했다. 생명의 최소 단위인 세포를 직접 관찰하고 화면에 옮긴 것이 한 예다. 그의 작품 속 자가 세포는 다른 것에 종속되지 않고 그 자체로 성립하는 한편, 다른 세포와 존재를 맺기도 한다.

이와 더불어 그는 「감춰진 것을 드러내는 Interprète」(2018)에서 낮과 밤이 교차하는 찰나, 수평선 근처에서 드물게 관측되는 녹색 광선을 소재로 삼아 서로 다른 세계가 맞닿은 순간을 담아내기도 했다.
이후 작가의 관심은 안과 밖, 사물의 표면으로 확장되었다. 이는 「감춰진 것을 드러내는 Interprète」 연작 중 자신 주변의 장소를 바탕으로 한 작품에서 구체화된다. 백령도의 북방 한계선 부근, 육지와 바다가 만나는 갯벌, 눈으로 뒤덮인 자연 등 그 주변에서 발견되는 사물의 껍질과 표층에 그의 시선이 맺힌다. 작가는 인간 중심적 시선으로 대상을 재단하지 않고, 다양한 식생이 뒤섞이고 오랜 시간 축적과 침식을 거듭한 자연의 흔적을 응축했다.

아울러 「섬성 Islandness」(2022)에서 작가는 일상 속 인공 구조물에서 나타난 현상을 채집했다. 버스 정류장의 유리 지붕에 고인 빗물과 증발 후 남은 침전물이 작품의 모티프가 되었다. 생태계를 이루는 작은 섬처럼 보이는 화면을 들여다보면, 이는 흰 바탕에 불규칙하게 찍힌 점들의 집합체라는 것을 알 수 있다. 관람자는 작가가 새긴 흔적을 단일한 이미지가 아닌 시간과 생태 흐름이 어우러진 장면으로 경험하게 된다.

이영호의 작품에는 재료적 측면에서도 존재가 형성되고 소멸하는 본질적인 과정이 고스란히 담겨 있다. 작가는 평면처럼 보이는 화면에 < 지지체 >를 구축한다. 장지에 아교와 호분, 돌가루가 반복적으로 칠해지고 건조되며, 그 위에 목탄이 쌓이고 먹이 침투되는 방식이다. 자연 재료가 켜켜이 지층을 축적하면서 지지체 사이에 공기가 순환하고 호흡하는 구조를 갖게 되고, 동시에 불에 타 생을 다한 나무는 작업의 재료가 되어 생명 순환의 과정을 이어 간다. 이처럼 그의 작품은 보이지 않는 시간의 흔적을 물질로 환원한 것과 같다. 목탄이 남긴 미세한 입자와 파편까지 화면의 일부로 수용하는 이영호의 태도는, 그가 세계를 관계와 과정의 장으로 이해하고 있음을 드러낸다. 그의 작품은 완결된 하나의 형상이 아니라 불확실한 대상들이 어떻게 상호 작용하며 지속하는 힘을 갖는지, < 우리 >가 살아 움직이는 현장을 보여 준다.

The Mimesis Art Museum in Paju Book City, Korea, is a distinctive concrete structure designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, collaborating with Carlos Castanheira and Kim Junsung. Known for its flowing, cat-like curves, the museum, built from 2006-2009, features exposed concrete, indirect natural lighting, and houses a private art collection for the publisher Open Books, blending modernist design with art and nature.}

^{Álvaro Siza Vieira is an internationally renowned Portuguese architect.

He is often called “the last of the modernist masters” as in his work functionality

prevails over outward extravagance. Among his major architectural works are the

Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, the Library of the University of Aveiro,

and the ‘98 Expo Pavilion of Portugal in Lisbon. In addition to the Mimesis Art Museum,

he designed two other buildings in Korea: the Álvaro Siza Hall in the Anyang Artpark,

and the Amore Pacific Research & Design Center in Yongin. Álvaro Siza was honored by

numerous prizes, among which the Pritzker Prize—one of the world’s most prestigious

architecture awards—in 1992, the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture

(Mies van der Rohe Award) in 1988, the Wolf Prize in Arts in 2001, and the Golden

Lion Award at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2002 and 2012.}
